Why do we struggle with self-development?

In this fast-paced world, juggling careers, family, friends and trying to squeeze in leisure time, leaves little time for anything else, so the notion of trying to live life to the fullest and advance our learning feel, at times, unrealistic.

My clients often say that their day to day tasks are so vast that they become unproductive and their long-term vision become blurred which leads to them losing sight of their overall purpose.  The only sense of achievement they feel is just making it through another day without failure. Trying to make the time to fit in self development is only a dream.

But why is it that we prioritise this?

By increasing your knowledge, you can remain in front of the pack.   Learning helps expand horizons and encourages self-development, confidence and growth.  It is key to living a fulfilling life and having a successful career.

The path we start out on is unlikely to be the path we remain on for the rest of our lives.  As we grow, inevitable crossroads present themselves but, if we’ve stopped learning, how can we possibly have the tools to make those changes when these opportunities arise.

I’ve discovered this first-hand when I was earning more money than I could ever have hopped for but still wasn’t happy in my career.  Thankfully, because i had continued my development journey, not long before obtaining my MBA and then enrolled in a digital online learning program, I was able to view a change in career as possible. Not only had I learned a bunch of new skills but I had also opened my world to new people, different visions and perspectives on life.   This was the starting point to my new and more fulfilled life.

How will lifelong learning help you to adapt to unexpected changes.

By continuing to learn you’ll more easily step out of your comfort zone and take on new opportunities.  It also gives us a sense of accomplishment and helps us boost our self-confidence and resilience.

It’s a proven fact that learning makes us happier people. When we have achieved the goals we’ve set, it increase our emotional well-being. And when we are happier workers, we tend to be more productive and engaged.

Another area I touch on with my clients is to encourage them to develop their innovate thinking.  This is accomplished by gaining knowledge to help us challenge the status quo.  Change is positive and can be triggered by applying inspired ideas. Learning exposes us to new ideas and helps us stay curious and engaged.

Be a lifelong student, keep learning new things, be curious and open to learning, be ready for the opportunities that life has for you and keep growing. “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”, Gandhi.
